The CATalyst Layout function allows you to set formatting values for the printed page. The term layout refers to parameters such as paper size, margins, transcript lines per page, transcript box lines, and header and footers. It also refers to how the page looks when using Page View in Edit, realtime and when it is printed.  To determine the layout settings when creating a layout, CATalyst uses measurements in inches or centimeters, depending on your setting.

When you translate a job or create a new job in Edit, you select a layout to apply to the job. While editing, you can make modifications to the existing layout or apply a different layout to specific pages, sections or the entire file. You can quickly see what layout is applied to your transcript by layout name on the Status Bar. If you modify the layout from Edit, an asterisk (*) displays in front of the name.

CATalyst comes with five sample Layouts which you can use, copy, or modify. These layouts as well as customer layouts are stored in the Layouts case in the System Files case. The sample Layouts include:

Layout Sample 1 - 25 lines 9 pitch - similar to the NCRA recommendations for transcripts.

Layout Sample 2 - 25 lines 10 pitch - similar to an official transcript.

NY Court 25 Line - NY Supreme Court layout.

Texas Layout 10 pitch - 25 lines 10 pitch Texas layout.

Texas Layout 9 pitch - 25 lines 9 pitch Texas layout.

CA layout - complies with California Minimum transcript format standards.

When you open a layout with the Layout function or choose to modify a layout from Edit, the Layout pane displays on the right side of the screen with transcript or sample text to the left. When you open a layout with the Layout function, some sample text displays. This sample text contains a brief description for each type of paragraph style.

Layout Formatting Panes

The Layout pane contains three sub-panes used to setup layout formatting values. If the pane does not display on your screen properly, the display may need to be resized. Measured values are in inches or centimeters depending on your Current Display Measurements setting. You can change the measured values from Manage Jobs by going to Tools, Options, International, Current Display Measurements (Alt-t, o, i). Use the Left and Right arrows or the drop down box at the top of the pane to display the desired pane.

Paragraph Setup

The Paragraph Setup pane contains margin, font, tab and punctuation settings for paragraph styles, such as Question, Answer, Colloquy, and By Line paragraphs.

Page Setup

The Page Setup pane contains position settings for top and bottom margins, line numbers, timestamps, and the transcript box.

Headers Footers

The Header & Footers pane contains position and font settings for headers, footers, and page numbers.

To Open a Layout

  1. Click File, Open, Layout (Alt-f, o, L) or click the Layout icon. If in Edit, click Format, Modify Layout (Alt-o, L)

  2. The Open Existing Document dialog box displays. Type a new or existing layout name in the File name field or select a layout from the list. Layouts are stored in the Layouts case under the System Files case.  Then click Open.

  3. CATalyst opens the selected layout with sample text. As a default, the Paragraph Style pane displays. Use the scroll bar as necessary to view all the fields. To view or modify Page Setup or Headers & Footers values, click the down arrow in the right top corner of the setup screen to select from the list. You can also use the Left and Right arrows at the top of the box to display the desired pane.

  4. Make changes as necessary then click Apply to apply the changes. The sample text automatically adjusts to the new settings. When finished, click File, Save (Ctrl + s) to save the file.
